How we chose

We picked well-known salon brands and popular at-home options for each job, and wrote down what each one is for. We haven't tested all of these ourselves yet — when we do, we'll add our own photos and notes here.

What the 2023 study found

In January 2023, researchers at UC San Diego and the University of Pittsburgh published a study in Nature Communications that exposed human and mouse cells to a UV nail dryer. One 20-minute session killed 20–30% of the cells; three consecutive daily 20-minute sessions killed 65–70%, and surviving cells showed DNA and mitochondrial damage.

It was a cell study. The authors say it can't prove nail lamps cause skin cancer, and that large long-term studies are needed.

How to protect your skin

Fingerless UV gloves (#S16) cover the backs of your hands under the lamp. More on protecting hands: anti-aging hands: crepey skin, age spots & SPF.

LED vs UV

Most nail lamps sold as “LED” also emit UVA, just in a narrower band. LED lamps cure faster, so time under the lamp is usually shorter — but LED is not “UV-free”. Cure times by layer: how long to cure gel polish.

FAQ

Do UV nail lamps cause cancer?

It has not been proven. A January 2023 Nature Communications cell study found UV nail dryer exposure killed cells and damaged DNA in surviving human and mouse cells, but the authors say it cannot prove lamps cause skin cancer and that large long-term studies are needed.

Are LED nail lamps safer than UV?

LED lamps are not UV-free: most LED nail lamps also emit UVA, in a narrower band. They cure faster, so time under the lamp is usually shorter.

How can I protect my skin under a nail lamp?

The American Academy of Dermatology suggests broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ before the manicure, or dark opaque gloves with the fingertips cut off, and gel manicures in moderation. The FDA advises limiting exposure to 10 minutes per hand. This is general information, not medical advice.
