When the salon is worth it
- Time. A salon visit is someone else's hour of work; at home it's yours, plus cleanup.
- Skill. Your first sets take practice. Expect a learning curve before gel looks salon-smooth.
- Acrylic and Gel-X are harder at home. Shaping, sizing and filing extensions take more skill than polish.
- Pedicures. Reaching your own toes is awkward, and a salon brings the tools and the foot bath; check that tools are cleaned between clients.

FAQ
Is it cheaper to do your own gel nails?
Usually, if you keep it up. A Miami gel manicure is $40 at the median; at a typical every-3-weeks re-do that is 17 visits and $802 a year with an 18% tip. An at-home kit is a one-time cost plus colors and remover as they run out. Enter the kit price you see on Amazon into the break-even tool on this page.
Are gel nail kits worth it?
They are worth it if you will use them more than a few times and are willing to learn. The kit pays for itself once its price is lower than the salon visits it replaces; the break-even tool on this page does that math with the price you enter. Your time and the learning curve are not counted.
How much does it cost to do gel nails at home?
You buy a lamp plus base and top coat once (or an all-in-one kit), then colors, remover and cuticle oil as they run out. We do not list Amazon prices because they change; check the current price on Amazon.
Is BIAB worth it?
BIAB starts at $55 at the Miami median. With a typical infill every 4 weeks that is 13 visits and $844 a year with an 18% tip. At home it needs a builder gel, an LED/UV lamp and practice shaping.
